Why Christians Should Engage with Emerging Tech
The rapid growth of technology in our world today is impossible to ignore. From artificial intelligence to virtual reality, these innovations are reshaping how we live, work, and connect with one another. As Christians, we are called to engage with the world thoughtfully and with wisdom. This includes not shying away from emerging technologies but using them responsibly and in ways that honor God.
The Call to Wisdom in Technology
The Bible calls us to be wise and discerning in all areas of life. Proverbs 4:7 reminds us, “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” As Christians, we should not fear the advancement of technology but approach it with the wisdom that comes from God. Emerging technologies can be tools for good if used in alignment with biblical principles. By engaging with these technologies, we have the opportunity to shape them for God’s purposes.
Embracing Technology for Good
While some may view new technology with skepticism, there are countless ways it can be harnessed for good. For example, virtual spaces allow us to hold Bible studies, prayer meetings, and counseling sessions, connecting believers across the globe. Christian organizations use social media platforms to spread the gospel, and AI is helping to make life-saving medical advancements. As Genesis 1:28 states, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it,” God has given us the knowledge and tools to cultivate and steward His creation, including through technology.
Understanding the Impact of Technology
It is important to recognize that emerging tech can have both positive and negative consequences. We must be cautious of its potential to foster disconnection, isolation, or harmful content. Ephesians 5:15-16 advises, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” Christians must navigate the digital world with integrity, ensuring that we use technology in ways that align with our values and draw us closer to God rather than distract us from His purpose for our lives.
The Opportunity to Lead in Tech
Rather than leaving the development of new technologies to secular forces alone, Christians have a unique opportunity to lead with biblical values in mind. By becoming involved in fields such as AI, cybersecurity, and software development, we can bring God’s wisdom into the tech industry. We are called to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16), and that includes using the tools at our disposal to bring truth, hope, and light into the digital age.
Conclusion and Prayer
Emerging technologies can be daunting, but when we approach them with faith, wisdom, and a heart to serve God, they offer endless possibilities for advancing His kingdom. As Christians, we are equipped to navigate the digital world responsibly and with purpose, using these tools to spread love, build community, and fulfill the mission Christ has given us.
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of knowledge and innovation. Help us to approach emerging technologies with discernment and wisdom. Guide us in using these tools to glorify You and serve others. May we be wise stewards of the resources You’ve entrusted to us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
